South America has enjoyed a long affair with surf rock dating back to the 1960s when American artists like Dick Dale, The Ventures, and The Beach Boys popularized the genre. Despite the United States’s claim to surf rock and its association with California beaches, Perú’s surfing tradition can be traced to pre-Columbian times. In coastal cities like Huachaco, fishermen ride the waves—for fun and work—in long woven watercrafts known as caballitos de totora. Such is the love for surfing in Perú that the country had its own World Champion in 1965: its first champion was a debonair gentleman named Felipe Pomar whose other well-documented claim to fame is having surfed a tsunami.
Within this context, the arrival of El Sonido de Los Belking’s in 1967 was a perfect fit for the times. Formed in Lima by a group of friends fresh out of high school, Los Belking’s were poised for success. Psychedelic guitars, instrumental tracks cut for the local matinee, and the group’s high sartorial standards (think matching suits, paisley shirts, and polished black boots) made El Sonido de Los Belking’s an immediate hit. On the album, hypnotic love songs (“Tema para jóvenes enamorados”) ride along with tougher cuts (“Condenado a muerte” and “Funerales”), conjuring an air of premature wisdom that only teenagers can perfectly evoke. Sadly for Los Belking’s and other surf rock groups of the era, the Peruvian government had other plans. In 1969, a coup d’etat (followed by years of economic crisis, social discontent, and censorship in the arts) put a stop to the fun. Fortunately, like most visionary art, the music of Los Belking’s lived on enough to reach us today. Surf’s up!
