New York psych-rock trio Prison beef up their number on 'Downstate' bringing in five extra musicians to create a jam-friendly "mega-band" - basically a wall of distorted axe noizze.
You don't always need contemporary gloss to make an impression. Prison's debut, 2023's 'Upstate', featured Endless Boogie's Paul Major - a critical figure in NY's '70s punk scene - and although he's no longer present in the lineup, the band clearly know their history. They make the kind of grubby psych-cum-blues-cum-stoner-rock fog that only emerges from relentless jamming - think Sabbath via Acid Mothers Temple - and their souped-up personnel list only helps matters. Prison are first and foremost a live band, with songs emerging from lengthy stream-of-consciousness improvisations. That's evident on 'Downstate', an album that kinda dissolves as it progresses, swerving genre constraints but lashing itself together with overdrive and sheer psychedelic momentum.
