Boney M's enchanting biography began in 1975, when Frank Farian (Franz Reuter), having organized a casting, selected an exotic black quartet for his future group, which included emigrants who were indigenous to the Caribbean Islands. The official date of creation of Boni M is considered to be 1976. This year, the so-called "golden line-up" (Liz Mitchell, Maisie Williams, Marcia Barrett and Bobby Farrell) recorded their first major hit, "Daddy Cool". In the same year, the album "Take The Heat Off Me" was released, which became the first of eight existing albums.
Boney M's songs "Daddy Cool" and "Sunny" literally "blew up" the charts of Sweden, Norway, Austria and, of course, Germany. After a while, the whole of Europe already knew them. However, Boney M's true peak of popularity came in 1978, when the single "Rivers Of Babylon" / "Brown Girl In The Ring" took first place in England, spent a total of 40 weeks in the British charts and became the third best-selling record in the history of England. It was in 1978 that the famous Boney M performance took place in Moscow. This event was not only cultural, but also political in nature, as Western music in the USSR had been subjected to strict censorship for many years. Ten unforgettable concerts by Boney M, which were sold out at the Rossiya Hall, played an important role in weakening the Iron Curtain. Boney M's Soviet tour became a real global sensation and was covered by many foreign media outlets, including the American Time.
But show business lives by its own laws, and the high-profile fame was soon followed by a deafening scandal. As it turned out, the main soloists of Boney M were only two people - Frank Farian himself and Liz Mitchell. The other members, including audience favorite Bobby Farrell, served as the band's bright backdrop and nothing more. From that moment on, problems began to grow within the team, which led to the Farian-Farrell conflict. In 1979, the world saw Boney M's next album, Oceans Of Fantasy, which went platinum, and in 1981 Bobby Farrell was forced to leave the band, giving way to a new member, Reggie Tsibo. Subsequent albums failed to reach their previous heights, and the band's popularity began to decline. The band's last album, Eye Dance, was released in 1985, and Boney M's farewell concert took place in January 1986. Currently, the members of the disbanded Golden Four are continuing their solo careers.
