The Fërtility Cült is a Finnish band that offers an original blend of Progressive Rock and Doom enriched by keyboard and horn textures. The new album “A Song Of Anger” was released on October 11, 2024 via Black Widow Records and contains seven long tracks with guest appearances. Hypnotic, electronic sounds open “A Thousand Starships,” characterising a prolonged intro that leads into a warm, expressive vocal. The sounds envelop the listener, culminating in a pompous interweaving of horns and keyboards, combining Progressive Rock and Doom with a distinctly personal and original touch. In a succession of dynamic vocal parts with engaging choral refrains and intense instrumental sections, the band develops this profound track that immediately immerses us in the musical atmosphere of the album. Wind melodies open “Fame Everlasting,” characterised by a slow-moving rhythm section and a dynamic, pathos-laden vocal. The jazzy touch given by the horns, a killer bassline and the continuous tempo changes are an added value to the track, with the intensity increasing as the minutes tick by. An excellent interweaving of intense vocal parts and instrumental sections with first the lead guitar and then the horns, exploring the different facets that characterise the band’s style. “The Duel” opens with an ’80s synth, then develops into a track that incorporates the gloomy atmospheres of Doom and more Progressive Rock traits. Choral vocals counterbalance the heavier sounds with granitic riffs intertwined with saxophone and guitar offering sophisticated solo interventions. The second part of the song develops an instrumental section that incorporates more Psychedelic elements, with the use of effects and modulations and dilated sounds that envelop and accompany the listener to the finale. Orchestrations and the sweet female vocal of Minttu Tervaharju open “Briseis,” a track with a dreamy atmosphere in the first part. As the track progresses, the band incorporates more heavy elements, with massive guitar riffs and fine saxophone cues culminating in an intense instrumental section. The soft, delicate vocals and dreamy atmospheres of the opener return, and the track pleasantly concludes. Energetic, incisive vocals and heavier sounds characterise “The Curse of the Atreides,” a track that is distinctly Doom with forays into Prog. The guitar offers an interesting solo cue in the first part, then the track evolves between Prog and heavier passages, with the sax as the protagonist in the finale. “No Surrender, No Retreat” spans genres and styles, incorporating elements of Space Rock, Doom and Progressive Rock. Winds and guitar intertwine with keyboards and electronic sounds, solid and elaborate drumming creates an elaborate rhythm section together with deep basslines. The vocals are dynamic and add incisiveness to the sound, which in the middle part explores more Experimental sounds, ending in a musical crescendo. The title-track “A Song Of Anger” concludes the album, an epic over 12 minutes long that explores a wide range of genres and sounds. Starting with their signature sound, the band experiments with long instrumental sections that enhance the compositional and performing technique of the artists involved. Quality ideas, with the long playing time being exploited to evolve the central theme of the song with valuable solo inserts and intense choral passages. An album that confirms the good things previously heard from this band, which offers a mature and original sound. A mixture of Doom and Progressive rock enhanced by the horn textures that make the band’s style original. A recommended listen for lovers of Doom and Progressive Rock sounds, finding the right compromise between the two genres and enhancing the band’s personal style.
