Lol Coxhill, Fred Frith - French Gigs (2020)

Part of this album was recorded during a short tour in 1978, shortly after Fred Frith's long-time progressive rock band Henry Cow ran out of milk, and talented multi-instrumentalist and composer Frith was worried about self-doubt associated with the beginning of a solo career. The entire first side of the album was recorded a few years later, when the duo got together for a surprise concert in Reims. Meanwhile, Fried moved to New York and confidently moved along the aforementioned path as a freelance solo artist. In both cases, the acting is excellent, and the time gap between performances becomes something of a reality that magically disappears when improvisers of this level take the stage.
