Now 87 and recently retired, Orin reflects on her life, emphasizing humility and dedication to those around her.
In the short documentary *The Only Girl in the Orchestra*, directed by her niece Molly O’Brien, Orin’s exceptional musical contributions and her philosophy of finding joy in playing “second fiddle” are thoughtfully explored, celebrating her understated yet impactful legacy.
On January 23, 2025, it was nominated for the Best Documentary Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

She has won five Emmy Awards for her work. Karpman was trained at the Juilliard School, where she played jazz by day and honed her skills scatting in bars at night.
