"We met up on a below freezing day in Chicago at Northwestern University, I had spent an hour or so before meet up time watching enormous chunks of ice get thrashed against the shoreline, water spilling over and immediately freezing along the paved walkway while only my eyes peered out from behind my layers of sweaters and thick fur lined coats. Letting the scene dictate a vibe to enter the studio with.
Dan and I had done a session before at Elastic Arts, lots of beautiful things came out of it, but this felt like we had become familiar friends, developed a common language.
We set up, threw some loose ideas around, found our center and started in.
We tracked a few hours of material.
Dan then took the tracks home and turned them into ingredients for a good soup, and like a soup, blended and tasted, added a little more here and a little more there. A few “oh what if I added this?!” ideas got thrown in the mix, he stirred them around until we had something that warmed us through the cold. Sounds coming out of the speakers like steam of the broth, melodies poking through like spices, tones filling your pallet like a softened vegetable. We let it simmer and coalesce until we felt it was just right to serve. We shared our soup of sounds with Andrew Weathers to master, and he sent us back a sonic round of homemade sourdough fresh from the oven.
We hope this record can be a good meal shared with friends, nourishing.
