While wine prohibits any kind of fusion, the music of the quintet, sorry, the Kinteto of António Ferro doesn't mind being mixed at all, as long as the “cocktail” is pleasant to the palate. This is the case of this – one assumes from the tones of the cover – twilight red with which the band from Porto proposes to emulate their fusionist companions, always serious and affected in an attempt to resemble as much as possible the Mahavishnus Orchestras and Weather Reports that time left irretrievably behind.
KAF, besides the red, don't give a damn about seriousness and only aim to make good music, without concerns about kinship or cheap exhibitionism. What would they remember? To look for fadunchos, traditional, vulgar and those popular melodies like “Cochicho” just for the pleasure of transforming them into pieces worthy of the greatest credibility. All at the expense of impeccable arrangements, in which the brass plays the main role (João Courinha, sax, Claus Nymark, trombone, Eduardo Santos, trumpet) in the creation of this “buffo jazz”, which more than once recalls Carla Bley's fanfares.
António Ferro on bass and João Paulo on drums (with occasional percussive contributions from João Nuno Represas) keep the band moving reasonably straight. When they don't succeed, everyone starts laughing. The music ends up being enriched and the surprises justify the changes in pace of certain compositions where it seems like you are walking in one direction and then end up in another. A Douro wine from the best vintage.
