Under the Surface is a poetic Belgian documentary directed by Guido Verelst, released in 2024. It follows the life of Anne, a 33-year-old woman with autism (ASS) and a visual impairment, who dreams of living underwater as a mermaid. Beneath the surface, she finds freedom and happiness, away from the noise and pressures of daily life. However, living independently on land presents challenges. Over three years, Verelst documented Anne’s journey as she gradually builds her life with her supportive partner, reminiscent of Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid.
The film features stunning underwater cinematography and Anne’s personal video diary, providing an intimate look into her world. Acclaimed by critics, it has been described as a touching and visually beautiful exploration of Anne’s unique experience.
After the screening, the Belgian band Dez Mona will perform live in the foyer.
Named after Othello's wife in Shakespeare's tragedy, Belgian outfit Dez Mona produce an exotic European sound that holds the middle of alternative and contemporary pop.
