Polar Noir is the project of songwriter Sandra Gern, who sought to raise awareness about the precarious state of the oceans with her debut single "If Everybody Listened". Since then, nature—particularly water—has been the greatest source of inspiration for Polar Noir, with its protection serving as her main motivation. The subsequent singles have continued to explore longing and missed opportunities in a society that has become increasingly disconnected from itself and the environment, all wrapped in shimmering, glassy dream-pop.
Polar Noir’s music has struck a chord worldwide. Her songs have earned international airplay on stations such as KEXP, Deutschlandfunk Nova, rbb Radioeins, 1Live, rbb Fritz, BR Puls, Bayern 3, FM4, FluxFM, egoFM, Radio 100,7 Luxembourg, LRT Opus FM 98.3, and Radio X. This exposure quickly led to support slots with bands like Grammy-nominated M83 and Cari Cari, as well as her own live performances. Most recently, she released "Run," an '80s- inspired kraut-pop track, and "Is It Over Now?" a bittersweet, bubbling synth-pop song. The latter’s heartbreaking chorus continues to rotate across radio stations throughout Europe.
"Same Water" is now the final single ahead of her highly anticipated debut album, COMING UP FOR BREATH, which will be released on January 24, 2025.
