Zdenka 2080 by Olsen is a concept album inspired by film, literature, and music, particularly drawing from apocalyptic sci-fi novels by Octavia Butler and Gene Wolfe. Influences also include films like Tekkonkinkreet and Embrace of the Serpent, which explore themes of capitalism, colonialism, and greed. Musically, Olsen is inspired by Oakland’s Hot Record Societe collective, along with artists such as Shuggie Otis, Herbie Hancock, Raymond Scott, Stereolab, and Flying Lotus.
The album envisions a dystopian future Earth in 2080, ravaged by corporate greed and government mismanagement. A corporate initiative to harvest solar energy for a spaceship results in Earth cooling, forcing the elite to flee to another planet while those left behind struggle to survive. The story follows a young earthling who discovers an octagonal room with eight paintings, each leading to new dimensions representing Earth’s thoughts. The artist, Zdenka, unknowingly influences the planet’s fate through her dark artwork. The protagonist embarks on a quest to convince Zdenka to create more hopeful imagery to save the Earth.
Olsen connects the album's themes to her own creative struggles, using the story to reflect on the power of art and the importance of intentionality in creative expression. She explores how creative blocks can lead to negativity and isolation, emphasizing the responsibility artists have in shaping perceptions and emotions through their work.
