Chuck Roth - watergh0st songs (2025)

BAND/ARTIST: Chuck Roth

Arriving on Bill Orcutt's Pailalia label, Chuck Roth's debut is an unexpected combo of post-hardcore, classical guitar and improv bolted to a backbone of electronic music.

If you remember Shane Parish's 'Repertoire' (also released on the Pailalia imprint), that's a good reference point for 'whatergh0st'. But while Parish re-imagined electronic music on classical guitar - his version of AFX's 'Avril 14th' is an all-timer - Roth rethinks his own electronic compositions in much the same way. Roth started as a classical guitarist, but a fascination with electronic music took him down a different musical path; on 'watergh0st', he takes songs written on synth and works out how to give them the physicality of the guitar. You can hear what he means on 'Twister', the intricate patterns work perfectly on guitar, but think a little deeper and you can almost hear the bleeps. In fact, the complexity of the looping phrases makes us think back to Slint or Don Cabellero, but there's no showing off here - Roth's minimal songs are humble in their own way, stripped to the bone to reveal the emotions beneath the ornamentation.
