The recital is part of a project that aims to preserve and promote the pianistic work of José Brazilício de Souza (1854-1910), author of the Anthem of the State of Santa Catarina and one of the most prominent composers in the musical scene of Santa Catarina. Pianist Rodrigo Warken returns to the stages of Santa Catarina to present a recital centered on the work of José Brazilício de Souza (1854-1910). A composer of unquestionable talents, illustrious in his time, Brazilício is practically unknown to the general public today. The project, carried out through the Culture Incentive Program (PIC) of the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, with support from Celesc, will include a statewide tour in eleven cities in the state, the publication of previously unpublished scores and recordings. Although he was born in Pernambuco (Goyana), due to a temporary transfer of his military father to the Northeast of the country, José Brazilício lived in what was then Desterro (Florianópolis from 1894), where he was a teacher, musician and astronomer in his spare time (as he called himself). While still young, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro in order to expand his musical horizons. There, he attended the opera house and came into contact with local musicians. Returning to Santa Catarina, he began teaching and composing. An influential figure in his time, Brazilício composed the opera “O Ermitão de Muquém”, symphonic works, chamber music and sacred music. In addition to being a conductor and violinist, he was a pianist, having left many compositions for the instrument. These include waltzes, schottisches, polkas, mazurkas, havaneiras and quadrilles, in the style of ballroom music of the time. The scores, still in handwritten copies, have never been published or recorded in their original piano version. Warken, who had already dedicated himself to projects promoting the works of composers from Santa Catarina (CD – Entre Cláudio Santoro e Edino Krieger, 1998; CD – Saudades no Coração: Aldo Krieger, 2003), began researching Brazilício in 2010. At the time, Sueli Sepetiba, the composer’s great-granddaughter, gave the pianist from Santa Catarina an album with some of the composer’s piano compositions, which served as the main source for the project that is being developed. “This is a repertoire of inestimable value, both in terms of musical quality and in relation to what this set of works represents for the cultural heritage of Santa Catarina and Brazil,” emphasizes the pianist. The selected songs are part of the Sousa family’s private collection and are not yet available to the general public. The state tour begins in May, passing through the cities of Lages (Aristiliano Ramos Cultural Center, May 8), Palhoça (Casa Nobre Institute, May 9), Joinville (Juarez Machado Theater, May 10), Timbó (Museu da Música, May 15 and Brusque (Aldo Krieger Institute, May 16). In July and August, the recital will be held in Chapecó, Joaçaba, Jaraguá do Sul, Blumenau, Itajaí and Florianópolis. Also in the middle of this year, the edition with works for piano by Brazilício and the recordings in extended play (EP) format will be released. The recital program proposes a counterpoint between the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) and José Brazilício de Souza (1854-1910). Although they were not contemporaries, Chopin's works, which circulated in musical circles Brazilians in the 19th century certainly served as inspiration and model for Brazilício. His repertoire includes mazurkas, polkas, schottisch and waltzes, showing that Brazilício's creativity and talent can coexist side by side with immortalized works of the piano repertoire. Rodrigo Warken was born on the island of Santa Catarina. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Music at the University of Rio de Janeiro, complementing his studies with a scholarship from the University of California, Los Angeles. He obtained his Master's degree in Music and Master's degree in Education and Culture from UDESC. He is currently a doctoral student at the same institution. Awarded in several national competitions, his artistic activities include solo and chamber music recitals, recording albums and coordinating cultural projects. He has worked as a professor of music and cultural production at UDESC, UNIVALI, Universidade Federal Fluminense and Instituto Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
