The full, previously unreleased 33-minute psychedelic funk jam session of "Do Your Thing" by Memphis rhythm legends the Bar-Kays has been mixed directly from the original tapes. Isaac Hayes, already a funk pioneer at Stax Records, was tasked with composing the groundbreaking 1971 Shaft soundtrack, pushing R&B boundaries with extended compositions. His albums, such as Hot Buttered Soul and The Isaac Hayes Movement, featured lengthy tracks far beyond the typical three-minute format of the era. The epic “Do Your Thing” from the Shaft soundtrack originally stretched to 19 minutes, ending with a dramatic vinyl-scratching sound. However, an additional 13 minutes of improvisatory, psychedelic funk-infused jamming had remained hidden in the vaults—until now.
