Birds of Paradise is a dance-theater production by the Pioneer Winter Collective, inspired by the bird of paradise and celebrating the resilience, vulnerability, and desire of queer individuals. Premiered in 2021 after a pandemic hiatus, the production was initially presented as a series of solo choreoportraits exploring solitude, collectivity, and rebirth. As live performances resumed, it evolved into a multidisciplinary production incorporating dance films, live performances, and layered sound elements.
The show received praise for its visual and artistic integration. It features an electronic score by sound designer and composer Juraj Kojš, incorporating performer sounds like singing, breathing, and heartbeats. Initially accompanying the live performances, the music is now being released as a standalone experience, along with access to the dance films on Vevo.
