Sound designer and technician Mats Erlandsson and composer Yair Elazar Glotman examine the space between the notes on 'Glory Fades', balancing their electronic and acoustic instrumentation by focusing on tonality and decay.
The duo developed a "common collaborative musical language" to help them write this one, and they stick to the same rules throughout the album. Although it's primarily made with acoustic instruments - plucked and bowed acoustic guitars, zither, bells, double bass, violin and percussion - electronic processes and treatments, like tape manipulation and re-amplification are used to add contrast and depth to each composition. The results are impressive, both from a compositional and a technical standpoint.
Erlandsson and Glotman draw us into the tension created from negative space, when we begin to anticipate the next percussive hit or strum. Although the tonality is more traditional on 'Copper Entries', the mood is similar, like hearing a terrifying spaghetti-noir soundtrack played by an avant-classical ensemble. Even when they play piano and add what sounds like a frozen, ghostly choir on 'Pale Stars', there's the same rigorous attention to detail.
