Golden Earring - No Promises... No Debts (1991)

No Promises... No Debts is an album by the Dutch rock band Golden Earring, released in July 1979.

The album is one of three ill-fated albums from one of the most infamous periods in Golden Earring's history. American tours ended in disaster, the group was financially ruined, and even much of their popularity had to be canceled. Despite these miserable circumstances, No Promises... No Debts had one bright spot: the catchy top 3 hit "Weekend Love". This single, which was little more than a glorified demo, became one of the biggest hits of 1979. The rest of the album is very diverse, which is at the expense of coherence. Typical album tracks such as "Heart Beat" and "Don't Stop the Show" were still regularly silenced before concerts. The closing track, "By Routes", is notable: it is one of the few instrumentals the band has ever released, if not the only one.

After the confusing crossover attempt with "Grab It for a Second", Golden Earring reunited in their native Netherlands to record this album. This time, guitarist George Kooymans took over production, and all members of the band collaborated on the writing of the album. The songs are more catchy, and the self-indulgent epics are pushed to the background in favor of short songs, lasting about three minutes. As a result, "No Promises... No Debts" continues the hard rock direction of the past few albums, but manages to retain Golden Earring's distinctive personality, even as it pushes the band in a more commercial direction. The album is "an elegant and cohesive hard rock album with a pop flavor that will appeal to Golden Earring fans and casual listeners alike."
