ML Buch - Skinned (2020) [Hi-Res]

ML Buch - Skinned (2020) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: ML Buch

ML Buch’s Skinned, now available on vinyl for the first time, is a dazzling debut album that blends vintage pop with cutting-edge digital production. Following her breakthrough Suntub, Buch crafts a hook-filled fusion of OPN-esque electronics, sparse orchestral elements, and sharp songwriting that recalls artists like Erika De Casier, James Ferraro, Oklou, and Tirzah.

Created almost entirely with MIDI instruments, Skinned reimagines soft-rock nostalgia with a modern twist. Buch’s literate, heartfelt songwriting and skilled production breathe new life into sugary harmonies and catchy melodies, seamlessly merging them with quirky, digitally warped textures. Tracks like "Touching Screens" explore contemporary dilemmas—“I’m touching screens more than skin”—while layering AutoTuned harmonies with pitch-bent wails, playful bass lines, and ‘80s-inspired drum fills, all delivered with genuine affection for her pop influences like Belinda Carlisle and Fleetwood Mac.

The album’s standout moments include the edgy “Can’t Get Over You With You,” blending Ferraro-like soundfonts with fragmented synth solos, and “Sap,” which delves into eerie, ambient dissonance reminiscent of a looping Enya track. While Skinned might not match the polished brilliance of Suntub, its eccentric charm and inventive production make it an endlessly intriguing listen.
