Broes, a celebrated Belgian folk band, received the Flanders Folk Award for “Best Live Band” in 2023 and has been captivating audiences for 15 years at both Belgian and international festivals. Their third album, premiering at Minardschouwburg, is a musical tribute to the legendary expedition ship Belgica.
The Belgica was captained by Adrien de Gerlache, who led Belgium's first polar expedition to Antarctica in 1898. The ship's journey, filled with adventure and adversity—including being trapped in Antarctic ice for 15 months—is chronicled in de Gerlache’s journals. Inspired by this remarkable story, Broes reflects its spirit in their music, mirroring the unity and determination of the ship’s international crew.
The new album navigates through diverse musical landscapes, blending Latin American rhythms with Balkan, African, and Scandinavian influences, much like the ship’s journey to exotic ports such as Rio de Janeiro and Madeira. The compositions capture the expedition’s emotional highs and lows, evoking feelings of wonder, nostalgia, and exhilaration.
The quintet—Anouk Sanczuk (violin), Elke De Meester (accordion), Florian De Schepper (guitar), Zjef Van Steenbergen (bass guitar), and Gielis Cautaers (percussion/drums)—craft a boundary-defying soundscape that takes listeners on a voyage as adventurous as the Belgica. This is one musical journey you won’t want to miss!
