Sister Smile, a project by twin sisters Romy and Sari Lightman, explores themes of devotion, faith, sensuality, and defiance through astral folk songs that blend shimmering electronics with acoustic arrangements. Their close harmonies evoke comparisons to The Roches and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. The album imagines a surreal dialogue between two 20th-century female mystics: Etty Hillesum, a Dutch Jewish writer imprisoned during the Holocaust who explored queerness, spirituality, and humanity amidst violence, and Jeanine Deckers, a Belgian nun turned pop star ("Dominique") who faced exile, poverty, and tragedy after being rejected by the Catholic Church for her queerness.
The Lightman sisters weave these historical figures’ stories with reflections on their own Jewish upbringing and rejection of its ideologies, including their critique of unyielding support for Israel amidst conflict in Gaza. Through Hillesum and Deckers’ stories, the album delves into the transformative power of universal love and belonging, offering a creative lens on history while envisioning a new language of collective hope and devotion for the present.
