Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. The 1978 Jazz Messengers was one of Art Blakey's strongest groups in years, although it would soon be overshadowed by its successor (which introduced a young Wynton Marsalis). With trumpeter Valerie Ponomarev, altoist Bobby Watson and a tenor saxophonist forming a potent frontline and new material from each of the principals (plus pianist James Williams) in addition to a lengthy ballad medley, this is a fine all-around set, last available on LP.
Not as well known (or esteemed) as many of the earlier albums from the 1960s that Blakey and the Messengers made that had more famous and better known front lines that included such luminaries as players like Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, and Wayne Shorter (among other Hall of Fame jazz performers). But this album from the 1970s is every bit as good in my opinion. It is a very hard driving, powerful version of the band that features Valerie Ponomarev on trumpet, David Schnitter on tenor sax, and Bobby Watson on alto sax with an excellent supporting bass, piano, and, of course, drum ensemble. Definite five stars for an outstaning album made during a period that was the nadir of acoustic jazz in the U.S.A., and an album that is now enjoying a renaissance and reevalution by many knowledgable jazz fans, listeners, and critics.
Tracks:
