Mississippi John Hurt was born in March 1894 in Teoc, Mississippi, and grew up in Avalon. He began playing guitar as a young boy and developed a unique fingerpicking style. He recorded songs for Okeh Records in 1928, including "Avalon Blues," but his music career was interrupted by the Great Depression.
In the 1960s, Hurt's music was rediscovered by Tom Rockwell, who tracked him down after hearing his 1928 recordings. Hurt, by then living in obscurity, was invited to Washington, D.C., for new recordings and performances.
The album was recorded in Washington, D.C., in 1963, capturing Hurt's skillful guitar work and warm vocals. Tracks include classic blues and traditional songs like "Avalon Blues," "Richland Women Blues," and "Spike Driver Blues."
