"Thukles" is the latest album by Sicilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Carmelo Salemi, released on March 2, 2023.
Inspired by the Greek pioneer Thukles (or Theokles), who was the first to colonize the Ionian coast of Sicily, Salemi explores new musical horizons, blending classical and folk elements with jazz influences.
In the album, he masterfully plays the "friscalettu"—a traditional Sicilian flute—alongside the clarinet and bass clarinet, creating unique melodic interweavings.
The recording was done live, featuring musicians Manuel Salonia (drums), Giacomo Carveni (acoustic guitar), and Cristiano Nuovo (bass guitar), which adds depth and emotional richness to the compositions.
