Joseph Athanasius Chamala Kabasele, known as Le Grand Kalle, was a prominent Congolese musician born on December 16, 1930. He is considered the father of modern Congolese music and is best known for leading the band Afrikan Jazz. Kabasele began his musical career in the early 1950s, forming the band Groupe Doula Georges. In 1953, he established Afrikan Jazz, which became one of the most popular African rumba bands, featuring notable musicians like Dr. Nico Kasanda and Manu Dibango. Kabasele also made history by creating his own record label, Surboum African Jazz, and composing politically themed songs, including the famous “Indépendance Cha Cha”, which became an independence anthem. In the mid-1960s, Kabasele faced setbacks with the departure of key members from his group. He continued to support singer Pepe Calle and passed away on February 11, 1983. Kabasele's contributions to music, including the fusion of Cuban and African rhythms, have had a lasting impact on African music history.
