Cappella Romana is a choral group specializing in music of the Orthodox world, but here, the ensemble strikes out in a new direction. There is a guest conductor, Nadia Tarnawsky, a small all-female group of singers drawn from the larger choir, and there are a couple of new vocalists brought on board with expertise in Ukrainian folk traditions. One can learn quite a bit about those traditions from the music and the extensive booklet, which translates all the Ukrainian texts (even the quizzical "Our Oven Is Laughing"). Tarnawsky includes music from various Ukrainian wedding traditions and divides her program into six parts: "The engagement," "Invitation to the wedding," "Preparing the koroval (the wedding bread)," "Preparing the bride," "The morning of the wedding," and, occupying the second half of the program, "The wedding ceremony." Some of the latter consists of sacred music that is closer to what Cappella Romana has done in the past, but the more folkish pieces are entirely distinctive, with rhythmically rough solo lines in which a chorus of women joins and smooths them out a bit. Even listeners with no particular interest in Ukrainian folklore will enjoy the singing in itself; the market is wide open for the music now that the Bulgarian Women's Choir and Värttinä are not heard so often anymore. The album does match earlier Cappella Romana releases in being beautifully recorded, and if one samples here, one may well be hooked.
