Uniquely Mancini - The Big Band Sound Of Henry Mancini (1963)

Henry Mancini has never come closer to a "pure" big band jazz album as he does on this one. There isn't a single violin in sight, yet in a similarity to Kenton's orchestra, Mancini augments the standard sax/trumpet/trombone lineup with French horns (of which Kenton's mellophonium were a distant cousin) on some of the more mellow tracks on this collection, like the buttery smooth "Stairway to the Stars." Bass flutes take over on Mancini's unique arrangement of "Rhapsody in Blue," while piccolos punctuate "Hot Canary." Aside from that, there is a lot of hard swinging here, and none swings harder than the Mancini-penned "Banzai Pipeline," with "Green Onions" and "C Jam Blues" coming in at close seconds. "Night Train" is one of a handful that feature Plas Johnson's smoldering tenor, and plenty of other cream-of-the-crop west coast jazz musicians fill out the lineup.
