Alicia Maguiña (1938–2019) was an outstanding Peruvian singer, composer, and researcher who made significant contributions to the preservation and development of Peruvian musical culture. From an early age, she demonstrated a talent for music, learning to play the piano and guitar. As a teenager, she moved to Lima and deepened her knowledge of Creole music, collaborating with masters like Oscar Avilés.
Her repertoire included works that reflected the diversity of Peruvian music, from coastal rhythms to Andean melodies. Some of her most famous compositions include the waltz "Viva el Perú y sereno," the tondero "La apañadora," the festejo "El aguador," and the huayno "Perla Andina." Throughout her career, Maguiña received numerous accolades, including the Order of the Sun of Peru in the rank of Grand Officer and recognition as one of the five Women of the Bicentennial.
Her legacy continues to inspire and enrich Peruvian culture, serving as a bridge between traditional and contemporary musical forms.
