The Swiss trio AMAMI returns with ISLANDS, a new EP featuring four explosive tracks along with their Dub versions. Following the success of their previous projects GIANT and SOLEIL, the group continues to explore the intersection of Dancehall, Dub, and Afro-Pop, while staying true to their live approach, without sequencers or computers.
With ISLANDS, AMAMI presents four distinct tracks, each like a different musical island, each embodying its own unique world. Inspired both by Japan’s Amami Island and by the legendary Island Records label of Chris Blackwell, the EP offers an immersive sound experience, blending tropical warmth, unstoppable rhythms, and dreamy energy.
The single Wrong Way kicks off the EP with a powerful Jamaican influence, mixing Steppa, Rockers, and Dub into AMAMI’s signature explosive fusion. This track, a real dance floor igniter during the group’s European tours, is an energetic bombshell that turns every set upside down. Next comes Hurricane, with its Ghanaian Highlife-inspired, mid-tempo groove, followed by Queen, an Afro-disco track that evolves into an apocalyptic electro ending. Finally, Eagle, the trio’s boldest track, presents itself as a danceable anti-hit, diving into a dreamy universe inspired by the tropical island of Amami.
The EP also stands out visually, with a stop-motion animation music video directed by Swiss-Brazilian artist Luan Banzai for the single Wrong Way, along with high-quality visualizers for each track.
In addition to the four original songs, ISLANDS features four Dub versions, paying homage to the Jamaican Dub scene. For these remixes, AMAMI collaborated with Dub legends MAD PROFESSOR and VIBRONICS from the UK, as well as Bernese Dub scientist DUBOKAJ. These bold reinterpretations honor the genre, emphasizing bass, drums, and sound effects like Delay and Reverb, all while staying rooted in a dynamic and experimental vibe that invites dancing.
