A contemporary take on the saxophone trio format
The trio of youngsters, alto saxophonist Asger Nissen, bassist Thorbjørn Stefansson and seasoned drummer Kasper Tom present their personal and sophisticated take on the classic format. The album contains original compositions and improvisations by the three members, outlining a complex yet melodic universe of sounds and rhythms.
Since his arrival in Berlin at the end of 2017, the Danish alto saxophonist Asger Nissen has built a solid name as an in-demand musician on the European jazz scene. His personal sound and energetic and curious style have led to collaboration with a large number of musicians from the European jazz scene, for example Jim Black, Jeff Ballard, Chris Dell, Phil Donkin, Pablo Held, Jonas Westergaard, Otis Sandsjö and Phil Donkin.
Bassist Thorbjørn Stefansson grew up in Aarhus, but since 2019 has lived and studied in Berlin. After early studies in Denmark and Sweden he moved to Germany to study at the Jazz Institute Berlin, where he quickly became an integral part of the city’s pulsating jazz scene. Thorbjørn has since played with several international names, e.g. Moritz Baumgärtner, Jacky Terrasson, Peter Weniger and Uli Kempendorff, and is considered one of the top upcoming bass players on the improvising scene in Europe.
In the past 20 years, drummer Kasper Tom has established his name on the European improv/avantgarde scene, not least as leader of the groups FUSK and Kasper Tom 5, but also as a sideman in various ad hoc projects with musicians such as Rudi Mahall, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Axel Dörner and Johannes Bauer. He is part of the critically acclaimed collective Barefoot Records and has 25 releases under his own name.
