Desolace is the second release from Cogents, a post-ambient project by Washington D.C. multi-instrumentalist Ross Hurt (Burial Waves, Black Clouds). The album results from a collaboration with vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Neil Fallon (Clutch, The Bakerton Group), who previously contributed to Black Clouds' Everything Will Not Be Ok (2012). This time, they’ve crafted six instrumental tracks inspired by sci-fi soundtracks in the spirit of John Carpenter and Ridley Scott.
Desolace is a journey through a distant, desolate world, rich with mysterious atmospheres and soundscapes that cameras cannot capture. Tracks like “The Tabernacle” and “Bull of Heaven” elevate the album beyond a mere soundtrack, inviting listeners to explore far-reaching inner and outer worlds.
The mixing was handled by Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe), with mastering by Chris Common (These Arms Are Snakes). Desolace promises to be an ode to both the sonic and emotional void, blending dark synthesizer drones with extraordinary beauty, evoking the influence of Carl Sagan.
