The Rolling Stones‘ club show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in June 1999 is being released as Welcome to Shepherd’s Bush, across a number of formats in December.
The legendary rockers were preparing to play two nights at Wembley Stadium – their first London shows in four years – when they announced the surprise warm-up show at the 2,000 capacity West London venue.
The band played a number of rarely heard gems over the course of an hour and a half with Mick Jagger telling the crowd “If you want to see the hits go to the big place down the road!”. ‘Melody’ (from 1976’s Black and Blue) was performed for the first time since ’77, while ‘Moon Is Up’ (from 1994’s Voodoo Lounge) had never been played live. Despite what Jagger said, there were hits, of course, and Sheryl Crow joined The Rolling Stones during a mid-set ‘Honky Tonk Women’.
