A Psychedelic Folk-Rock Album Full of Marvel, Mystery, and Mushrooms !

Want to read something wild? Go and pick up any biography of any important blues, country or rock n’ roll singer from the U.S.A. who operated mainly in the 1950s or ’60s. Your mind will be blown, and I am willing to bet that the truth will certainly outshine the myths you may have heard about these performers.

Nah, they likely never stepped out on the crossroads, just like ol’ Robert Johnson. Nah, they were just involved in shootings, drinking, looting, and madness. Some of them had to be locked up, in jail, or in the nuthouse. Most of them came out and shouted: “Another round on me.”

Well, such behaviour isn’t necessarily something I’d openly embrace and encourage. But it certainly created a lot of eccentrics with plenty of original ideas for songs. There aren’t many of those around. Both the eccentrics and the wild songs are nearly gone.

Except that there’s hope. The Sensational Country Blues Wonders! are on a wild ride of their own and do not forget to document every wild twist and turn. “If i Stop Moving, I’ll Fall From The Sky” is unapologetic psychedelic country. It’s all a trip to see just how blurry one can make the world get and then report on it. Naturally, I was intrigued.

It’s not even that The Blues Wonder are looking to appeal to the lowest common denominator of joke songs. This ain’t a Tenacious D record. Album opener, “We Are Made of Stardust” is a gorgeous song that seems to have arrived straight from the Summer of Love. And it’s here just to give you hope.

But the The Sensational Country Blues Wonders! Aren’t preachers. Or doctors for that matter. “Why Did I Eat the Whole Bag of Mushrooms” is a panicky song about getting dosages mixed up. But there’s truth here as well as The Wonders muse about the frightening world outside and our collective need to find some kind of relief.

Yeah, these blues players are punks are hearts. “I Rode the Bus with Joey Ramone” is a song about one of the songwriter’s punk-rock heroes and a reminder that some of the best knowledge one can get is stuck forever on vinyl records.

Want more hope? “Magic Glasses” is an acid-tinged retro rocker about stopping to smell the coffee and watch for the colours in the sky. “Golden Teacher” with its nifty lead guitar lines is another song about letting go and enjoying the trip. And “One More Cup of Mushroom Tea” dares to ask: “What if Donovan had missed the plane to Rishikesh and The Beatles could’ve been joined The Sensational Country Blues Wonders instead?”

Where does it leave us? Blissed out, hopefully, but aware of possible consequences. The title track, “If I Stop Moving, I’ll Fall from the Sky” lets us in on a secret. The Wonders are loaded, floating and having a good time. And, this has worked for them. What they can teach you is to stop worrying so much, enjoy the pretty colors, and know that everything is going to be alright one day.
