Imaginos is the eleventh studio album by the American rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released in 1988. It was their last album with their original record label, CBS/Columbia Records.
The album took nearly eight years to complete and was originally conceived as the first in a trilogy of solo albums by drummer and songwriter Albert Bouchard. After Bouchard was fired in 1981 and CBS rejected the project in 1984, a reworked version was eventually released under the band's name. Many guest musicians contributed to the project, including Joe Satriani, Aldo Nova, and Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, while some band members were only minimally involved. As a result, Imaginos is often viewed more as a project of producer and lyricist Sandy Pearlman than a true Blue Öyster Cult album.
The album is a concept piece and rock opera based on Pearlman's scripts and poems from the 1960s. It tells a story about an alien conspiracy brought to fruition in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through the actions of Imaginos, an agent of evil. The narrative combines elements of gothic literature and science fiction, heavily inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. Subtitled "a bedtime story for the children of the damned," its lyrics are intricate and filled with historical references, provoking much fan and critical speculation. Musically, it is one of Blue Öyster Cult's heaviest albums, leaning toward heavy metal rather than the melodic, commercial hard rock of their previous records. The commercial failure of those earlier albums led to pressure from the record label, which ultimately caused the band to disband in 1986. Their subsequent reunion included only three members of the original lineup.
Imaginos received some critical acclaim but was not commercially successful. Following the completion of the Imaginos Tour, Columbia Records terminated its contract with the band. Albert Bouchard, excluded from the recording process after the initial rejection by Columbia, later took legal action against the band and label to protect his rights as the album's author and producer. Although Blue Öyster Cult continued performing live, they did not release another album of new material for ten years.
