Iranian multi-instrumentalist Kamyar Arsani (Faraway Ghost) and Indian drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin (Sunken Cages) create a unique style of digital folk music that combines Sufi mysticism, traditional Persian music, street rhythms from Mumbai, and contemporary electronic music. Momin accompanies Arsani's vocals and daf (frame drum) with a masterful blend of electronic and acoustic percussion, using his unique live-looping performance system.
Kamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter based in Washington, D.C., creating music ranging from classical Persian to experimental electronic. He is a teacher and performer of the daf and has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, and other renowned venues. Arsani is also the vocalist of Washington, D.C.-based punk band Shadow Riot.
Sunken Cages is the moniker of drummer and producer Ravish Momin, who trained with jazz master Andrew Cyrille and collaborated with artists like Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre. As Sunken Cages, Momin uses electronic and acoustic drums, layering loops and manipulating them in real-time. His music draws from Indian and Black music traditions and is inspired by street sounds of underground dance scenes worldwide.
