Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745) - a Bohemian Catholic contemporary of Bach - did not arouse the interest of musicians and musicologists until the last twenty years, and so has become, at least in the recent past, a phenomenon by means of first editions, recordings and musicological research. In the libraries of Prague, and particularly in the archives of Dresden, a former capital of arts, one can find music of great individuality and importance, music which differs radically from all the usual Baroque mediocrity. Even Bach himself, who in 1736 received the additional title of a Saxon court composer, is said to have esteemed the work of his colleague Zelenka.
