Twenty years after first making waves as a techno producer with his earliest EPs, Japan's Chizawa Q is back in the spotlight. In 2022, he rebooted his Lost Asia EP, originally released in the mid-2000s on R&S Records, the leading Belgian label in electronic music. Now, in 2024, he's taken things a step further, dropping his debut solo album under the R&S banner. It's a love letter to '90s Detroit-style techno, a sound once reserved for purists but now making a big comeback. The new album Xenoverse, is clearly influenced by his love for manga, as he mixes Detroit techno with jazz elements, reminiscent of Underground Resistance, the legendary collective from Motor City.
The album carries that same tribal and soulful vibe, with a steady, understated kick drum that anchors soaring synths and jazzy piano riffs. Tracks like "Planet 9" have the kind of energy that would have earned a big thumbs-up from Underground Resistance, while the retro-futuristic track "God Is Blue" feels like it's something Jeff Mills himself could have dreamed up. Then there's "Beluga," a high-energy banger straight out of the '90s playbook, channeling the spirit of R&S legend Joey Beltram. And while techno dominates much of the album, the closing tracks take a different turn, diving into breakbeat. The remix of "Cozmic Flowers" by Tokyo's drum and bass heavyweight Makoto Shimizu brings rich melodies that make the record irresistible for fans of electronic music who crave that soulful edge.
