For 15 years, Polish performer and professor Szymon Marciniak has collaborated with string-maker Gerold Genssler on a personalised bass sound. On this release, a showcase for the double-bass in classical music, they used a combination of gut and modern materials to achieve the warm tone of the early 20th century’s bass virtuosos. The album is not just about technique, however. It also pays homage to the golden era of the Czech double-bass school and its renowned father, František Hertl.
