The Almighty Groove is the latest project by seasoned musical explorer John Hollis, dedicated to creating music that resonates with the heart, feet, and soul, and uncovering "The Almighty Groove" wherever his journey takes him. Frère d’Afrique is a rich and soulful production, grounded in the tambor—the rhythmic heartbeat of Colombian culture and cumbia music. Featuring the masterful guitar work of Senegalese musician Mustapha (Tapha) Gaye, the album bridges the sounds and magic of two coastal communities on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Hollis’s career began with reggae, later expanding to collaborations with African, Colombian, and Cuban musicians, reflecting his deep connection to the African diaspora. His work with Colombian rhythms, such as cumbia, revealed their African roots, inspiring him to explore these connections more profoundly. In 2017, he recorded with Colombian tamboleros, building the rhythmic foundations for the project, and invited Tapha to contribute his intuitive guitar melodies, blending African traditions with Caribbean rhythms like bullerengue, cumbia, and mapale. The result is a seamless fusion of African and Latin influences, with elegant, spacious, and joyous grooves. For Tapha, simplicity and shared energy are key, creating a sound that celebrates collaboration and connection. The project also reflects the historical journey of African slaves, a poignant element for Hollis. His travels through Senegal, Colombia, and England traced the slave trade’s “triangle,” adding depth to the music’s narrative. Frère d’Afrique is not only a celebration of musical heritage but also a thoughtful exploration of shared history, infused with vibrant energy and groove.
