The British Festival of Nine Lessons and Christmas Carols, in which nine Bible readings are interspersed with Christmas carols, has been preparing for Christmas Eve for countless people for more than a hundred years — especially since the celebration has been broadcast worldwide from the Chapel of King's College since 1928.
The Hamburg Neuer Knabenchor choir has now adapted this tradition in a very special way. By choosing the form of nine lessons, the boys' choir follows a new direction to express the wonderful joy of Christmas.
Instead of reciting biblical or religious stories, Rufus Beck, known in Germany as the reader-reciter of Harry Potter audiobooks, reads fantasy-filled retellings of the Christmas story and poems dedicated to the great holiday.
Readings invite children and adults to embark on their own inner journey to Bethlehem, here it is fun, there it is thoughtful.
On the other hand, the musical choice is completely consistent with the old English tradition.
Here you can hear the most famous Christmas carols, as they can be enjoyed in Cambridge and all over England.
Some of the tunes were arranged by the director of the King's College Choir, others originate from Spain and the USA. Along with these arrangements, the mystically universal "Meeres Stille" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was set to music specifically for this CD by Hamburg composer Gloria Bruni.
