“A circle’s round” is a 66 minute-long, two-and-a-half year labor of love about discovering the practice of mindfulness and learning to find peace in the wake of pain, crafted by a singer-songwriter/electronic producer/pianist collaborating with a jazz drummer, classical string section, Brazilian bassist, and Chinese guzheng master.
The core narrative of the album was formed as I was reading Thich Nhat Hanh’s books for the first time, and around the time I then spent at Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, California. They describe my attempts to take the teachings I received not as theoretical, but rather concrete ways to live my life from moment to moment. The first, middle, and last songs in particular are about this practice, and provide a frame around the album. The songs between the frames describe events that are observed from that frame.
“When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”
–Kahlil Gibran
