Here's a superbly performed collection of little-known Baroque music, all tied together through its connection to a specific place: the court of Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, around 1700 (such electors were princes who picked the Holy Roman Emperor). International musical tastes ruled at Maximilian Emanuel's court -- indeed, it could hardly be otherwise, since a series of poor military decisions forced the prince to relocate as far away as Brussels. He employed Italians and admired the French court as the pinnacle of pomp and ceremony. Accordingly, the music here has a certain tenor of splendor, and it "reunited" the French and Italian tastes long before Couperin took on that challenge. The opening suite, entitled Nobilis Juventus (Noble Youth) from the Florilegium secundum of 1698, is an imagined parade of different nationalities, each given its own dance. It's not clear whether the "Entrée d'Espagnols" is supposed to sound Spanish, but the music here and in the final suite bearing the mysterious title "Sollicitudo" is unfailingly colorful. The two sonatas by Evaristo dall'Abaco are rich, lyrical pieces. The two sonatas by Johann Christoph Pez dispense explicitly international content, bearing lengthy Latin subtitles that identify them as "Gallo-Italus"; they also have traces of the more conservative German sonata style that continued to break up single movements into small chunks with different tempos. The two works at the center of the program, by Pachelbel and Kerll, are older pieces that the players imagine might have remained in the court repertory; the Partia II in C minor of Pachelbel is a delighful and once again international work that follows a polyphonically overflowing movement marked "Sonata" (this will appeal to lovers of the famous Canon) with a quintet of concise French dances. The performances throughout seem to be bursting with excitement. The historically oriented group Stylus Phantasticus is as international as the music, with members hailing from the U.S., Argentina, Britain, and various parts of continental Europe. Their approach is bright, even flashy, but perfectly controlled, and they make the most of music that could easily seem dull were it not both contextualized and performed so well. A model Baroque disc that belongs in every collection of music of the period.
