"Worlds Within Worlds" presents the album Safa by Palestinian musician Nizar Rohana. This is his solo oud album, and it is very personal.
Nizar grew up with the oud in his father’s hands. At family gatherings, his father often played, accompanied by his mother on the darbuka.
“My life is about music,” says Nizar. “It has always guided me and helped me develop as a person.”
Safa is Nizar's third album and the first focused entirely on solo oud performances. It reflects his entire journey with this instrument, covering his 2008 debut, Sard (Narration), and his 2016 album Furat (Euphrates), where the oud played in a trio with double bass and percussion.
"The word Safa has several meanings: purity, clarity, lucidity. Recording a solo album is more challenging because it’s as personal and sincere as it gets."
The album combines different styles. The first compositions, such as Safa, Mayadin, and Madar Hijaz, showcase Nizar's signature style with repeating and transforming motifs, like Bach's preludes.
Other pieces, Yasamin and Song Without Words, are more melodic and song-like. They unfold gradually, reflecting Nizar’s maturity as a musician.
Finally, pieces like Rast, Bayati, and Mufradat Nahawand are based on the taqsim tradition—an Arabic improvisational style. These compositions are inspired by two of Nizar’s heroes: Muhammad al-Qasabji and Riyad al-Sunbati, both considered pillars of Arabic music.
The album was created during a difficult time when there was a war in Gaza. This challenge led Nizar to rethink the meaning of life and music. But he realized that music is both a personal expression and a part of collective identity.
One composition, Darwish, is dedicated to Nizar’s late father. In Persian, this word means “the one who opens the door.” Nizar’s father was the one who opened the door to the world of music for him. In Arabic tradition, “darwish” refers to a humble and wise person, and Nizar believes his father was such a person.
Safa was recorded by Fieke van den Hurk at Dearworld Studio, mixed by Bishara Khell, a leading Palestinian composer.
