In the midst of scarcity of repertoire and recordings for clarinet by Korean artists, I vividly remember the thrill of encountering Isang Yun’s compositions for the first time during my college years. This experience strongly reinforced my belief in the importance of improving representation of these two elements in the field of music. Over the years, Eunhye and I have curated eight outstanding compositions by Korean female composers representing diverse cultural backgrounds and traditions, many of which were exclusively commissioned for this CD.
The title of this album, Arcade, is derived from the opening piece on this program by Juri Seo. In the notes below, the composer reminisces about the countless hours she spent in the damp, bustling video arcade rooms that were prevalent throughout Korea during her childhood – in the 1980s and 1990s. She recalls the “cacophony, thrill, desperation, recklessness, joy and madness” experienced there. These arcades serve as a shared bond that resonates in memories of youth, bringing us together.
Other composers whose works are heard here incorporate direct quotes and references to traditional Korean music and themes. Listeners will be captivated by the distinctive soundscape and musical language found in works such as Jiyoun Chung’s Ariaria and Jean Ahn’s Blush. SiHyun Uhm beautifully expounds on a famous Korean song on filial piety in Parents’ Love while Eunseon Yu ingeniously blends two well-known Korean tunes, Children’s Day Song and Red Light! Green Light! (무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다) in her piece, named after the latter song, which gained popularity in the Netflix hit program, Squid Game.
