“Bitter Moon” is the second single to emerge from the collaboration between Middle Eastern funk specialists Sababa 5 and singer-songwriter Inbal Nur Dekel. Hot on the heels of, “Yam”, “Bitter Moon” is a melancholic yet striking ballad, counterbalanced by an irresistible Middle Eastern groove.
Sababa 5, following a string of acclaimed instrumental releases exploring the intersection of traditional and popular Middle Eastern music, psychedelic rock, funk and disco, and after successful collaborations with vocalists Shiran Tzfira and Yurika Hanashima, recently teamed up with Inbal Nur Dekel. A rising star in the Tel Aviv scene, Inbal has built her reputation by specialising in rebetiko, a Greek genre with Middle Eastern influences traditionally sung and danced to by the urban working class, while also fronting the popular ensemble, Yanookis taverna
Sung in Hebrew, "Bitter Moon" is a longing ode to an absent lover. “My heart calls your name in the distance,” sings Inbal, with longing and sadness, yet also with a deep strength matched by Sababa 5 marching rhythm and groove. Eitan Darbkin’s synths tug at the heartstrings, while Amir Sadot’s skipping bassline and Itamar Weinstein’s shuffling Middle Eastern rhythm drive the track and the listener forward.
With such evident chemistry, "Bitter Moon" is bound to capture hearts, minds, and hips, and promises much more from this collaboration.
