Right from the opening track, the exotically titled “Cosmic Discotheque,” I was pretty sure I was going to love this album. I’m not really sure what’s going on, but that only adds to the excitement. After all, what is life without a bit of mystique and strangeness? If you are looking for something predictable and safe, then maybe you aren’t too late to get yourself an Oasis ticket. For the more adventurous, read on…
“Cosmic Discotheque” is a heady blend of 60’s pop and seventies soul, underground disco (natch), and low-slung funky rock and roll, all rounded off with great vocals and some timely gothic vibes. And if you think that is a lot to try to fit into one song, you ain’t heard nothing yet…to misquote Messrs. Bachman, Turner and Overdrive.
“Something Wicked This Way Comes” is the sound of an undead disco in full swing, “Autumn Fall” is the The Supremes and Edwyn Collins having a sonic sparring contest as Ornette Coleman keeps score, and “A Long Walk Home” is a Shatner-eque spoken word groover, complete with strange cosmic inclusions to help the track boldly go…well, anywhere it wants.
And, in a world where timing is everything, this drops perfectly in time to act as the soundtrack to the funkiest Halloween you will have ever experienced, courtesy of an album full of sonic tricks and musical treats, sonic spiced lattes, and bewitching music.
