The Tornados were a distinctive instrumental band in the early 1960s, best known for their 1962 hit "Telstar," which was the first song by a U.K. group to top the U.S. charts. Produced by Joe Meek, the song's innovative sound, driven by the clavioline and space-age effects, exemplified Meek's pioneering recording techniques. The band also served as the backing group for Billy Fury while releasing their own music, with hits like "Globetrotter," "Robot," and "Ice Cream Man" in 1963.

Frequent lineup changes and shifting music trends led to a decline in their popularity, though they continued to innovate, releasing creative tracks like 1966's "Pop Art Goes Mozart" and "Do You Come Here Often?," the latter considered the first openly gay pop song. Following Meek's tragic death in 1967, the Tornados disbanded, though they briefly reformed in the 1970s for nostalgia concerts. Their legacy has grown over the decades, with several compilations and the 2023 release of Love & Fury: The Holloway Road Sessions 1962-1966 highlighting their unique contributions to pop history.
