In the summer of 1970, Didier Malherbe and Loy Ehrlich met for the first time in Montaulieu, a remote valley in Haute-Provence. Didier, a founding member of the group Gong, had settled in a shepherd's house, while Loy lived in a small cabin and occasionally worked as a shepherd for local farmers. This meeting sparked an enduring friendship and a deep musical connection that led them to collaborate on many projects, eventually culminating in the formation of the group Hadouk in 1995.
The name Hadouk comes from the instruments they played: "HA" from the hajouj, a Moroccan bass instrument played by Loy, and "DOUK" from the duduk, an Armenian woodwind instrument played by Didier. Their first duo album was released in 1996, followed by six albums as a trio with percussionist Steve Shehan, and two more albums as a quartet with guitarist Eric Löhrer and singer-drummer Jean-Luc Di Fraya.
In 2024, their new duo recording, Le Concile des Oiseaux, marks a return to their roots. It resonates with their first album Le Bal des Oiseaux, forming a meaningful echo and completing the Hadouk cycle, which began over thirty years ago.
