Raped by Sextus Tarquin, son of the king of the Etruscans occupying Rome, Lucretia speaks out to describe her ordeal and demand justice. Then, refusing to live in dishonour, she takes her own life. Recounted by Titus Livius, this episode marked the establishment of the Roman republic and was the inspiration for many works of art, literature and music.
Jérôme Correas and Les Paladins explore this narrative and put into perspective the only four Baroque cantatas on the subject known to date. In these miniature operas, Alessandro Scarlatti, Montéclair, Handel and Marcello set Lucretia's speech to music: alternating between expressionist recitatives and virtuoso arias, these monologues follow the development of Lucretia's emotional state, moving from murmur to cry, from exaltation to despondency, right up to her final silence. Jérôme Correas has teamed up with four of France's finest singers – Sandrine Piau, Amel Brahim-Djelloul, Karine Deshayes and Lucile Richardot – to bring Lucretia's story to life, bringing it to us intact in all its strength and violence, superimposed on the stories of today and raising questions about contemporary women's voices.

Violée par Sextus Tarquin, fils du roi des Étrusques occupant Rome, Lucrèce prend la parole pour décrire son calvaire et réclamer justice. Puis, refusant de vivre dans le déshonneur, elle se donne la mort. Relaté par Tite-Live, cet épisode acte la naissance de la république romaine et est à l’origine de nombreuses œuvres plastiques, littéraires mais aussi musicales.
Jérôme Correas et Les Paladins explorent ce récit fondateur et mettent en perspective les quatre seules cantates baroques composées sur le sujet et connues à ce jour. Dans ces opéras miniatures, Alessandro Scarlatti, Montéclair, Haendel et Marcello mettent en musique la prise de parole de Lucrèce : alternant entre récitatifs expressionnistes et airs virtuoses, ces monologues suivent le cheminement émotionnel et expressif de Lucrèce, passant du murmure au cri, de l’exaltation à l’abattement, jusqu’au dernier silence. Pour lui donner corps, Jérôme Correas s’associe à quatre des plus belles voix françaises – Sandrine Piau, Amel Brahim-Djelloul, Karine Deshayes et Lucile Richardot : chacune s’empare ainsi de l’histoire de Lucrèce, qui nous arrive intacte dans sa force et sa violence, se superposant aux récits d’aujourd’hui et interrogeant la prise de parole féminine contemporaine.
