“We know the cost, but is it the truth?“

By now Pvris should need no introduction, with frontwoman Lynn Gunn being at the forefront of queer, female representation within the alternative space, and a plethora of incredible accolades to their name accrued over the past 10 or so years. Now reduced down to Gunn as the only full-time member, we see the project diverting from their usual path, taking a moment to highlight and empower other female, non-binary, and queer artists within the scene, and, after listening to this mix-tape, this effort is absolutely a success.

The self-dubbed mix-tape includes features from well-established names like Lights and Mothica, but also lesser known artists like Sizzy Rocket and Uffie. Gunn’s approach on this release truly allows each respective artist to shine in their own, unique way.

Take the opener, “Burn The Witch”, where we are treated to the triple threat of Gunn, Tommy Genesis, and Alice Longyu Gao taking turns over the beat, each bringing their own unique sound into the track whilst remaining cohesive. It’s a very fun approach to features, and this approach really gives these artists space to showcase their talents without overshadowing one-another. This approach is repeated on title track, “F.I.L.T.H”, with Gunn giving both Sizzy Rocket and Uffie plenty of space to showcase their own vocal talents, and matching their approach with her own vocal style. It’s this level of consideration and constraint that makes these tracks feel all the more effective in their attempts to showcase other artists.

“Reptillian” and “The Blob” depart somewhat from this approach, with the featuring artists, Mothica and Lights respectively, contrasting against Gunn’s own delivery. With both of these artists arguably being alternative scene legends already, these tracks feel more like a bit of fun, and that is really what they are!

Closing track “Oil & Water” is the only track on the tape without a feature. Here we’re treated to a much more emotive performance from Gunn, with both the delivery and lyrical content feeling extremely heartfelt. Perhaps it is fitting that it is thematically written about the relationship of characters Vi and Caitlyn in the animated League Of Legends show Arcane.

Overall, this release is exactly as described; a mix-tape. As far as showcasing and uplifting talent within the scene goes, it’s a huge success, with each and every artist really bringing their all here. With that said, there will still be people who expect that older Pvris sound, and you’re absolutely not going to find that here. But, for those who want some fun, electronic tinged pop music, this mixtape is certain to scratch that itch.
