Batata y Su Rumba Palenquera - Radio Bakongo (2003)

Batata y Su Rumba Palenquera - Radio Bakongo (2003)
Paulino Salgado Batata, a renowned Colombian percussionist from San Basilio de Palenque, has released his first solo album titled "Radio Bakongo" as a tribute to his Congolese heritage. The album takes listeners on a musical journey through Afro-Colombian genres such as Palenque music, champeta, sexteto, and son, showcasing the various musical influences that have shaped Batata's life. Produced by Lucas Silva Champeta Man, the album was recorded in both Bogota, Colombia, and Paris, France, and took four years to complete due to extensive research into Palenque and African music. "Radio Bakongo" also features collaborations with African music legends Dally Kimoko, Rigo Star, and 3615 Code Niawu, who add their unique touch to the songs, bridging the gap between Batata and their Congo origins. The album aims to create a connection between Afro-Colombian culture and Africa, introducing a new trend of Champeta called "Champeta Roots," which combines traditional music with the modernity of Africa. Overall, "Radio Bakongo" exemplifies the fusion of African and Colombian music, showcasing the richness and diversity of Afro-Colombian rhythms.
